Which workplaces need the FAW course?
High risk workplaces: construction sites, factories, workshops, warehouses, farms and commercial kitchens.
These are the settings where machinery, height, vehicles and heavy loads make serious injury a real possibility, and your needs assessment will usually call for first aiders trained to this level.
Larger workplaces of any risk level often need FAW trained first aiders too, simply because of the numbers involved.
This course is for:
- First aiders on high risk sites such as construction, manufacturing and engineering
- People appointed as the workplace first aider where the risk assessment calls for full training
- Anyone wanting a thorough working knowledge of first aid for professional or personal reasons
If your workplace is low risk an office, shop or small team, the one day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course usually covers your duty.
What does the FAW course cover?
Three days of mostly practical training, building from the primary survey up to the injuries and illnesses a first aider meets on a high risk site. Clinical content follows Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025, so the CPR and defibrillator technique is current.
- Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
- Assessing incidents and ensuring safety
- Managing unresponsive casualties
- Adult CPR and safe AED use
- Recovery position and monitoring breathing
- Heart attacks, strokes, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes, choking, and anaphylaxis
- Head, spinal, and chest injuries
- Wounds, bleeding, fractures, and shock
- Burns, scalds, and eye injuries
- Sprains, strains, and dislocations
- Poisoning and serious medical emergencies
An open course place at our Carlisle venue is £220 plus VAT per delegate for all three days, including materials, refreshments and the certificate. Onsite training at your premises is £1,200 plus VAT for a group of up to 12.
Because three days on high risk first aid is only worth doing if the practice is real. Twelve delegates per trainer means everyone works through the scenarios hands on and is assessed individually.
Since 2012, the Safe Haven network has certified more than 80,000 workplace responders, with a 99% first time pass rate.
